KiloJ ("we", "us", "our") operates the KiloJ mobile application and the website at kiloj.com. This Privacy Policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, and how we handle it.

1. What we collect

When you create an account:

• Email address and display name
• Password — stored as a one-way cryptographic hash; we never see your actual password
• Authentication tokens if you sign in with Google or Apple

When you use the app:

• Food diary entries — meals, food items, portions, serving sizes, meal type, notes, and timestamps
• Nutritional data for logged foods — macronutrients (calories, protein, carbs, fat, fibre, sugar) and micronutrients (sodium, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, and vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, E, K)
• Water intake logs
• Physical stats you enter: height, weight, date of birth, gender, and activity level
• Your goals — daily calorie, macro, and water targets, and your weight goal (lose / maintain / gain)
• Logging streak — current streak, longest streak, and related dates
• Custom foods you create, including their nutritional content

Automatically:

• Meal timing patterns — median time and frequency of each meal type, derived from your logs, used to send timely meal reminders
• Usage events — app opens and nutrition insight views, used to personalise the insights you see
• Push notification token — a device identifier provided by your OS, used solely to deliver meal reminders and weekly recaps
• Server logs — IP address, device type, app version, and request timestamps, retained for up to 90 days for security and debugging

2. How we use your data

• To operate your KiloJ account and personalise your experience
• To calculate nutritional information and generate eating insights
• To track your logging streak and motivate consistent habits
• To send timely meal reminders based on your usual eating times
• To send weekly recap notifications and emails summarising your progress
• To send transactional emails — password resets and account notifications
• To improve the app and diagnose technical issues

We do not use your data for advertising. We do not sell your data to any third party. We do not show third-party ads in the app.

We process your data to provide the Service you request and based on your consent where applicable.

3. Third-party services

We use the following services to operate KiloJ:

Each of these services operates under its own privacy policy. Photos are processed temporarily to identify food and estimate nutrition. We do not store photos after processing. We do not use your photos for advertising or training our own models. Photo analysis is performed by OpenAI and is subject to OpenAI's privacy policy.

4. Data retention

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active. You can request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by emailing support@kiloj.com. We will process deletion requests within 30 days (typically much sooner).

5. Your rights

You have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate or incomplete data
• Request erasure of your data
• Request a copy of your data in a portable format
• Withdraw consent for data processing where consent is the basis

6. Children

KiloJ is intended for users aged 13 and above. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, please contact us at support@kiloj.com and we will delete it promptly.

7. Security

We use TLS encryption for all data in transit and store passwords using industry-standard cryptographic hashing. While we take reasonable precautions, no method of transmission over the internet is completely secure.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as KiloJ evolves. Material changes will be communicated via email or in-app notice. Continued use of KiloJ after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
